Hurricane Helene Discussion

  • Joy Moss is leading relief efforts for Skyland UMC.
  • Due to Helene other priorities have been placed on hold. For example the annual Stewardship Campaign.
  • Several Skyland UMC families are in need of assistance.
  • Church focus is relief efforts not only in the church but also the community at large.
  • Per Donna Galloway, Skyland is currently assisting 50 to 100 persons per day.
  • Numerous items are available including food, water, paper goods, toiletries, etc.
  • Are we allowing outside groups to use our facilities? The group must have liability insurance and the Finance Working Team will have to be involved in money matters. Phil Shope will contact Skyland Fire Department for available meeting space. Someone from Skyland UMC will need to be on-site if outside groups use our facilities. Currently, a
support group for First Responders is working with Skyland. (2 people).
  • Downed Tree: Originally $5000.00 was allocated for removal of tree and sidewalk repair and the endowment fund would be used to cover the cost. Tree removal was $4000.00 but the sidewalk and curb repair estimate is $3950. A request was made to use additional $2950 from the endowment fund to cover the cost. The request was approved by the Board of Stewards on October 17, 2024. Also, the only assistance available from FEMA was a loan.

Currently attempting to develop a maintenance team. The newsletter will have a call-out. 3 volunteers to date.

The Trustees Working Team continues to update guidelines for the use of church property and facilities for the board to consider.

The Church bus is in the repair shop.

Pastors Report – Joe Tarpley

  • Sharon Blythe is looking for a full-size truck for non-potable water containers.
  • 10:30 am service thru October.
