On Sunday, October 4, at 4 PM, we will have our annual Animal/Pet Blessing Service. In some traditions, this is the very Festival Day of St. Francis of Assisi. While we do not lift up the saints of yester-year as much as some traditions, they have much to teach all Christians. Francis felt a deep affinity for all of creation, including animals, and he is considered the patron saint of ecology.
Francis sought to strike a balance between contemplation (prayer) and action (good works). I believe this to be an important factor for our life together at Skyland UMC.
Our service in the afternoon will celebration, especially the animal kingdom, and will include a special time of “Blessing of Animals.” We invite you to bring your pets. If your pet might be challenging to manage for the afternoon, bring something that is representative of your pet – like a photo. Some people may even bring stuffed animals! We will even take a few moments to remember our animal friends who are no longer with us.
This is a wonderful celebration of animals – your own and those you appreciate. You are invited to reach out to your extended family or neighbor and invite them to participate at any level they feel comfortable. We hope to see you and your friends/neighbors on this coming Sunday afternoon!
